Abstract: I was thinking about weather in Terraria and figured that lightning could be given a practical use of some sort. Maybe this system could be expanded even more. Something to make a player feel like a mad scientist toying with nature's forces.
Overview - Lightning bolts will be given the ability to be captured in a certain item that will store it for desired use. Using a wiring trigger to release the lightning onto nearby framed items will have a shimmer transmutation effect on those items. This serves as a more easily accessible version of shimmer, although with less benefits and some risk.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lightning Rod and the Copper Wire - Crafted with 2 Copper bars, the lightning rod is a block that will greatly increase chances of lightning during storms and Sandstorms (Static electricity) and channel that energy to connected rods and Leyden Jars (Next item to be explained). If a rod is actuated into the background it will not channel the energy. Copper Wire is sold by the Mechanic and channels energy without taking an actual block space, like regular wire. Unlike it though, it will still be visible at all times. If the Copper Wire does not connect to a Leyden Jar then the lightning that entered will dissipate in a flash that will cause harm to those nearby. It can also be painted. Lightning traveling down a rod or wire will cause it to flash for a moment. A wire at an un-activated Grate will have its energy blocked.
Leyden Jar - The Leyden Jar is a glass jar with an electrode inside crafted with a glass bottle, a chain, and any iron bar. When being filled with energy it will show this as a glowing, sparkling liquid that rises depending on the power level. If it goes over capacity it will result in a small explosion. Water can be used as a grounding point and extra Leyden Jars can also help to prevent hazard. Leyden Jars will hold their energy until a Grate allows them to pass it on somewhere.
Electrode - Electrodes are sold by the Mechanic and come in two varieties: Plus and Minus. One will only emit electricity while the other will only receive. The only real practical purpose of this is to release power from Leyden Jars that will then jump to the nearest item or entity (Entities/players will be harmed if release is not controlled with wiring). It also has an aesthetic use where electrodes can arc to each other without harming anything if the electrodes are actuated into background. This could be used as really cool decoration for themed builds.
Aether Compass - By Electrifying a Compass accessory it will turn into an Aether Compass. This will point to the direction of the nearest Aether Biome.
Review of this mechanic's use - In summary this can be used to transmute items, create electrical arcs as decoration, and damage enemies and bosses if lightning wiring is incorporated into arena design.
adding an entirely new ore for a single feature isn't really something worthwhile to implement, maybe substitute the copper with iron or just wires from the mechanic, other than that this one sounds awesome
I can imagine how lightning can have a visually stunning effect, and I really like the idea of trying to control the power of lightning!
There have been many ideas on mechanics that make finding the Aether more easily, and this has to be one of the most creative I've seen.
