You’re probably wondering why you’re looking at a pair of hiking boots…And you’re also (probably) wondering what this post is all about…It’s about the role #CulturalIntelligence plays in my relationship.Because the reality is my partner James and I differ on so many levels.🇬🇧 He is a Yorkshireman (North England)🇿🇦 I’m South African✖️ He is Gen X🟰 I am Gen YAnd, as I soon discovered on our recent trip to North Devon where we hiked the South Coast Pathway, he is competitive and very much focused on the task, walking so far ahead, it soon had me feeling frustrated and increasingly angry over being left behind.Because I’m the ambling walker who prefers to ‘drink in’ my surroundings careful not to miss a view, or a blossom, or wildlife, my expectation of an enjoyable hike is relationship-based, spending time beside one another knattering away.As a culturally intelligent individual, I soon realised our different cultural values at play, which opened up a conversation between us (over a delicious Devonshire cream tea of course!), and an agreement that moving forward we’d both have to adapt and compromise.In a nutshell? Would I offer a free Christmas tree as an additional benefit to attract international specialists? Rather no. ❌A shortage of skilled labour means you have to come up with something as a company. Even if the 🎄 sounds really nice, in a large international company you should bear in mind that not everyone has a Christian religion and uses a Christmas tree. 🌍 On the other hand, I am of course in favour of upholding traditions and putting up a Christmas tree IN the company. 🎅I actually find the benefits listed above very attractive. I've been working with Momenta Charitable Trust in a consulting role for the past year, assisting with marketing strategy and planning. We've worked on building awareness and relationships with local businesses to break down barriers and challenge myths about employment opportunities for those with lived experience of disability.When working with this space, we think we know disability and what it looks like, but often we don't. Employment New Zealand defines disability as follows:"Disability is a term covering personal impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions." We might think of disability as a physical disability, but disability is broad. You might not think you employ anyone with a disability, but you might. It could be that you think it's too hard, too risky, too challenging, or that your physical workplace is unsuitable. What I've learned is that our perceptions of disability are often wrong. People with lived experience of disability often can contribute more because of their disability - because they've been faced with situations those without disability never have to experience. Efforts to address the huge challenge of social work recruitment & retention can sometimes fuel the ‘crisis’ narrative in ways that are counterproductive. It’s right to be determined and clear and even angry about the state of things… but we need to let enough hope and light in too.
